Mooncat (月下猫, referred to as the “App,” “we,” or “us”) is a voice diary app. This policy explains how we handle information generated when you use the App and how you can manage that information.
Diary text, recordings, and photos may contain private information. Please pay particular attention to the sections about speech recognition, iCloud sync, location, and third-party services.
1. Information We Process
1.1 Diaries and attachments
When you create, edit, or import a diary entry, the App saves the text, recordings, transcription results, photos, and other attachments you provide on your device, together with related information such as dates, categories, moods, weather, places, and attachment properties. We use this information to provide saving, editing, playback, search, organization, and export features.
Structured diary information is stored in a local database on your device. Recordings, photos, and other attachments are stored in the App’s storage space. Recording, editing, and local saving work offline. Online speech recognition, weather queries, and cloud sync require an internet connection.
1.2 Speech transcription
When you use transcription, the App uses Apple’s system speech recognition service to convert recordings into editable text.
The App prioritizes on-device recognition. If your device or the selected language does not support on-device recognition and online recognition is needed, we prompt you to choose whether to allow it. If you agree, the audio to be transcribed is sent to Apple for processing. You may decline online recognition and continue saving recordings or entering text manually.
1.3 Location and weather
When you use features that obtain your current location, places, or weather and grant location permission, the App obtains your current location to look up place names, nearby places, or local weather, and saves related information to your diary according to your actions.
Place queries use system location and mapping capabilities. Weather queries use Apple WeatherKit to request weather for the latitude and longitude of the requested location. Apple processes the location and network request information needed to provide this service. The App does not use these features to continuously track your movements in the background.
1.4 Subscriptions and purchases
When the App initializes subscription services, checks membership benefits, or you purchase or restore a subscription, we use the Apple App Store and RevenueCat to verify transactions, provide and restore membership benefits, and understand subscription activity.
The information involved includes an app user identifier, purchase history, product identifiers, transaction and subscription status, and the app, platform, and region information needed to operate the service. In the current integration, RevenueCat generates the app user identifier; you do not need to register a separate account for diary features. Apple processes payments. We do not receive your full bank card or credit card details, and we do not provide diary text, recordings, or photos to RevenueCat.
1.5 Preferences and privacy settings
The App stores preferences such as language, appearance, playback, and privacy settings on your device so that your choices are retained for future use.
When system authentication protection is enabled, the operating system handles Face ID or device passcode verification. The App receives the authentication result, not your facial biometric template or device unlock passcode. The app lock restricts access to the App; it does not mean that diary files have additional app-level encryption.
1.6 Contact and troubleshooting
When you choose to email us or send feedback, we process the contact details, issue description, and attachments you provide to respond and address the issue. Please avoid sending diary entries, recordings, or other private information unrelated to your request.
The App records necessary runtime errors and diagnostic information to help identify faults. We do not include diary text, transcription content, recordings, photos, media paths, or secret keys in application logs.
2. iCloud Sync and Storage
The App uses a local-first storage approach. iCloud sync is enabled by default in the current version. When your device is signed in to an available iCloud account and sync conditions are met, the App attempts to sync diary entries, text, attachments, and related information to that account’s private CloudKit database and retrieve changes from the cloud.
This means that data may leave your current device and be stored in Apple’s iCloud service. This feature does not publish your diary entries publicly. If iCloud is unavailable, your connection is interrupted, or storage is insufficient, you can still record, edit, and save locally, but cloud data may not yet be up to date.
You can manage the App’s available iCloud permissions and storage through Apple Account and iCloud settings in iOS. Turning off iCloud access or uninstalling the App does not delete data already stored in iCloud. System backups may also retain app data, depending on your device settings.
We do not promise that all data remains solely on your device or within a particular country or region, and we do not describe all data processing in the App as end-to-end encrypted. Where Apple and other providers store and process data depends on their service arrangements, account regions, and applicable rules.
3. System Permissions
The App requests permissions according to the features you use:
| Permission or system capability | Purpose | Effect of declining |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone | Record voice diaries | Recording is unavailable; text features remain available |
| Speech recognition | Convert recordings into text | The relevant system transcription feature is unavailable; recording and manual editing remain available |
| Location while using the App | Obtain places and weather | Your current location and its weather cannot be obtained automatically |
| Photo access or system photo picker | Add selected photos or set an image background | Photos cannot be added through the affected method; other features remain available |
| System authentication, such as Face ID | Verify identity and protect access to the App | If biometrics are unavailable, device passcode availability depends on the options provided by the system |
When you import attachments or backups through the system file picker, the App reads the files you select. Using a system picker does not give the App unrestricted access to all your photos or files.
You can manage permissions at any time in iOS settings. Withdrawing a permission does not affect processing already completed or automatically delete saved diary entries or attachments.
4. Third-Party Services and Disclosure
The App uses the following services for the corresponding features. Diary content used only locally is not sent to subscription or weather providers as part of subscription checks or weather queries.
| Provider or service | Purpose and information involved | Privacy information |
|---|---|---|
| Apple iCloud / CloudKit | Sync diary entries, attachments, change records, and account-related information | Apple Privacy Policy |
| Apple system speech recognition | Transcribe audio locally or online with your permission | Apple Speech Recognition Permission Information |
| Apple location and mapping services | Convert coordinates into places and look up place information | Apple Privacy Policy |
| Apple App Store | Process payments and subscription transactions | Apple Privacy Policy |
| RevenueCat | Process app user identifiers, purchase history, and subscription status to verify benefits and analyze subscription activity | RevenueCat Privacy Policy, App Privacy Information |
| Apple Weather / WeatherKit | Provide weather using the requested location and network request information | Apple Privacy Policy, Weather Data Sources |
We do not sell your personal information or use diary content for targeted advertising.
When you choose to export or share data or open an external website, the recipient or service you select receives relevant information according to your actions, and its own privacy rules apply. We process and disclose information only as necessary to provide the features described above, with your authorization, or to fulfill applicable legal obligations. Where separate notice or consent is legally required, we will follow the required procedures.
5. Retention and Deletion
Saved diary entries and attachments remain in the App for your continued use until you delete them.
Deleted entries move to “Recently Deleted,” where they are normally retained for 30 days and can be restored during that period. You may also confirm permanent deletion there. To propagate deletions to the cloud and other devices, the App may retain necessary deletion markers and pending sync records. Automatic cleanup may also depend on sync acknowledgment and other conditions. Removal from a list or the end of a retention period therefore does not mean that every device and cloud copy has been erased immediately.
Transaction records, request logs, or backups held by third-party services are retained according to their policies and applicable law; the diary’s 30-day rule does not apply to them. Feedback we receive is retained only for the time needed to address the issue and meet necessary obligations.
Uninstalling the App generally removes its data from the device, but does not automatically cancel subscriptions or guarantee deletion of copies in iCloud, system backups, or files you have exported or shared with others.
6. Your Choices and Rights
You can view, correct, and delete diary entries in the App, obtain copies using the data export feature, and manage permissions and iCloud access in system settings. You can cancel subscriptions through Apple’s subscription management features.
Depending on the law applicable to you, you may have rights to access, copy, correct, or delete personal information, withdraw consent, restrict or object to certain processing, and lodge a complaint with a competent authority. Please contact us at the email address in this policy if you need help.
We may request verification information necessary to handle your request, but we will not ask for your Apple Account password, device passcode, or unrelated complete diary entries. For data stored only on your device or in your personal iCloud that we cannot directly access, we will explain the available management options. We will respond within the time limits required by applicable law.
7. Information Security
We protect information through measures such as isolated app storage, system permissions, protected network connections, and access controls, and seek to limit processing to what the features require. No storage or transmission method can guarantee absolute security.
Please protect your device and Apple Account. Exported files may contain complete diary entries and attachments; check their contents and recipients before sharing. If a security incident involving personal information occurs, we will take remedial measures and meet applicable notification and reporting obligations.
8. Children and Minors
The App is not specifically designed for children. Minors should use it under a parent’s or guardian’s guidance and avoid providing unnecessary personal information in feedback or when sharing. Where processing legally requires a parent’s or guardian’s consent, that consent must be obtained first.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information that should not be processed, please contact us at the email address below. We will investigate and handle the matter in accordance with applicable law.
9. Policy Updates and Contact
We will update this policy and its date when features or data processing practices change. We will communicate material changes through an in-app notice or another appropriate method. Where renewed consent is legally required, we will seek it before the relevant processing takes place.
